Empowering Independence

What is disability care?
Nearly half a million Australians are currently registered to receive government assistance for a disability.
The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) provides individuals with a permanent and significant disability the ability to select the type of care and support they require, offering them greater autonomy and control over their care and how they manage their condition.
A disability refers to any physical or mental condition that hinders a person’s ability to complete certain tasks, engage in activities, or interact with the world around them.
The term “disability” encompasses a wide range of conditions, including cognitive, developmental, intellectual, mental, physical, sensory, or a combination of these factors.
Types of disability care
Comprehensive In-Home Disability Care Services
In-home disability care offers qualified professionals to assist children and adults who prefer to stay in the comfort of their own homes. For those living with a disability or for full-time caregivers, managing daily activities and household tasks can be a challenge without additional help.
Home Care Packages (HCPs) are available from approved providers to support older adults with complex needs, allowing them to remain in their homes. NDIS-funded support is also available for those who are not eligible for HCPs, providing in-home care services, as well as home modifications and equipment.
Disability Aids and Equipment
A variety of aids and equipment, such as mobility aids, walking frames, wheelchairs, over-bed trays, and food trolleys, can support those living with a disability. Additionally, independent living centres and private companies offer a wide range of products like raised toilet seats, slip-resistant bathroom mats, dressing aids, and specialized kitchen tools, all designed to help individuals live more independently at home.
Allied Health Professionals
Allied health professionals play a key role in improving the quality of life for those living with physical disabilities. They assist with enhancing flexibility, balance, and movement, and provide guidance on issues like diet, exercise, proper lifting techniques, and home modifications. Registered NDIS professionals include occupational therapists, physiotherapists, and dietitians.
Respite Care
Respite care services offer relief to caregivers and individuals with disabilities. These services can be tailored to meet individual needs and include in-home support for overnight stays, weekend facility-based care, recreational programs, camps, and host family stays for children and young adults with disabilities.
Residential Aged Care Homes
Residential aged care homes offer both accommodation and disability services for individuals over the age of 65 who have a severe disability. These facilities are specifically designed to accommodate those with limited mobility and provide ongoing care from nurses and allied health professionals.
